Libya signs contract with Motorola Solutions to install TETRA technology

Minister Al-Fintazi, Bob Schassler sign the agreement

Minister of Communication and Informatics in the Salvation Government Sami Al-Fintazi and the Executive Vice President of Solutions and Services at Motorola Solutions Inc. Bob Schassler, signed  an agreement in the Spanish capital of Madrid on Friday to complement the second-phase of TETRA project.

The agreement was first signed between Libya's Etisalat Naweea Company and America's Motorola Solutions in 2013.

Minister Al-Fintazi also agreed with Schassler to open a Motorola branch in Tripoli next month as per the contract.

Upon completion, the TETRA project will provide confidential and encrypted telecommunication services in all over Libya. It will also provide a point-to-point function that traditional analogue emergency services radio systems did not provide. This enables users to have a one-to-one trunked 'radio' link between sets without the need for the direct involvement of a control room operator/dispatcher.

TERA also gives longer range, which in turn permits very high levels of geographic coverage with a smaller number of transmitters, thus cutting infrastructure costs.

Etisalat Naweea Company was established in 2009 and it's the first local company owned by the telecommunications and informatics ministry. It is specialised in deploying and managing mission critical communication systems.

Motorola was awarded the contract in 2013 with a total cost of LD187m ($150m) to install a Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) system in Libya.

Terrestrial Trunked Radio TETRA, formerly known as Trans-European Trunked Radio, is a professional mobile radio and two-way transceiver, colloquially known as a walkie talkie, specification.

TETRA was specifically designed for use by government agencies, emergency services, police forces, fire departments, ambulance for public safety networks, transport services and the military.
