The Presidential Council (PC) has said it is vital to have a unified army and stick to the elections timetable as it welcomed the Action Plan for the gradual withdrawal of mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya.

"This important event, which came at a very crucial time, is a true reflection of the Libyan people's desire to restore peace and national sovereignty, leading to the unification of the military institution, and holding free and fair presidential and parliamentary elections that enjoy the unanimity and acceptance of all parties involved the political process," the PC stated on Saturday.

The statement referred to the PC Head Mohamed Menfi's meeting with the UN Secretary-General on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York, considering the signing of the plan as a culmination of efforts and talks with international parties.

It emphasized commitment to work with all parties to confirm the ceasefire agreement signed on October 23, 2020, and implement all Security Council resolutions in particular, as well as the recommendations of the Berlin Conference, describing the adoption of the implementation mechanism as a "big step."

The Council also called on all international partners, including Libya's neighbours, to deal positively and responsibly through their support, backing, and cooperation in implementing the mechanism adopted by the Joint Military Committee under the auspices of the United Nations Mission.
