The European Foreign Affairs Council discussed at its session Monday the developments in Libya in light of the postponement of the elections.

In a statement, the Council says that Libya stands at a crossroad after calling off the voting of December 24, 2021, acknowledging the right of the Libyan people to choose their representatives through the ballot boxes.

The statement also affirmed the EU's continued support for holding free, fair, and inclusive elections as soon as possible. "We encourage all stakeholders to agree to move forward towards giving Libyans the ability to vote."

It also demanded that the country be free of all foreign armed groups and forces.

For his part, the High Representative of the EU indicated that they would assess the possibility of deploying a mission to observe the election when the Libyans draw up a new electoral schedule.
