Libyan authorities, with the support of the UN Migration Agency (IOM), launched the Migration Working Group, on Tuesday, reported the UNSMIL on its official website.

The UNSMIL said that the step was taken as part of the Coordination Framework for International Technical Cooperation with the State of Libya.

The Migration Working Group is one of the six working groups of the Coordination Framework for International Technical Cooperation with the State of Libya, endorsed during the Senior Policy Committee meeting held on 18 July 2017 in Tripoli, said the UNSMIL.

The launch, held at the Ministry of Planning in Tripoli, was chaired by the Head of the European Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jaalal Alashi and co-chaired by IOM Chief of Mission Othman Belbeisi, and it was attended by representatives of relevant Libyan Ministries, including Ambassadors and Embassy representatives, UN agencies as well as a high-level delegation from IOM HQ.

“This working group aims to coordinate respective strategy and policies on migration and to serve as a platform for constructive dialogue on migration aiming to provide actionable tools and practical solutions to govern migration effectively with respect of human rights, and to reduce the impact of irregular migration.” The UNSMIL explained.

The chairman, Jaalal Alashi, reiterated that Libyan authorities reaffirmed the importance of the establishment of this working group, which has been highly timely, adding that they look forward to working closely with the international community in general and IOM in particular In order to overcome the outstanding issues and develop ways to deal with the phenomenon of migration that concerns the entire region.

“We are hoping that the launch of this working group will serve as the first step towards efforts to manage migration, for the benefit of all,” stressed Othman Belbeisi, IOM’s Chief of Mission, according to the UNSMIL.

It also indicated that a number of sub-groups will be launched afterwards in order to cover key priority areas such as labor policies, border management and health related issues in Libya.

Meanwhile, CNN reported days ago that there had been human rights violations against immigrants in Libya, revealing what it said was a slaves auction, causing waves of outrage locally and internationally.
