The Law Enforcement Department of the Interior Ministry arrested, on Sunday, the former General Director of Production Projects at the state's electricity company (GECOL), currently a member of the Board of Directors, on charges of corruption in the company.

The Interior Ministry underscored it had taken all legal measures against the defendant and referred him to the competent authorities.

Last month, the head of the Audit Bureau, Khaled Shakshak, forwarded to the Public Prosecutor a report regarding the causes of the long hours of power cuts.

Shakshak accuses, in his report, the GECOL administration of professional negligence and deliberate mismanagement, which resulted in significant deficiencies in the public grid's functioning.

"Such actions amount to criminal offenses," said Shakshak, recommending to ban the officials mentioned in the report from leaving the country until the completion of investigations.
