The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced Saturday that 500 megawatts will be added to the network after the operation of the first turbine at the Gulf Power Plant in Sirte and the second gas unit in Al-Sareer Plant.

The Company's Information Office said the first turbine of the Gulf Power Plant was successfully operational with an output of 250 megawatts, while the second and third units of Al-Sareer Power Plant are only operating with a capacity of 410 megawatts instead of 500 megawatts because of the weak transmission of 220 KV, therefore causing a decrease in the level of production.

The GECOL's Control Department explained Thursday that the power cuts and the load shedding program were mainly used to generate an additional 1600 megawatts to meet the energy consumption demand estimated at 7000 megawatts during the summer.

The Director of the Company's Control Department, Abdel Basset Farrara, clarified in a press conference that the deficit was due to the suspension of Ubari Power Plant project and the fire that broke out at the emergency station of Khoms, in addition to the interruption of work in some generation units in the Gulf Power Plant, Al-Sareer, Zueitina, and Al-Rwaius.
