Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah has reiterated that elections are the sole option available for Libyans, hoping that the Spanish and European efforts in support of the UN mission in Libya would lead to a constitutional base to serve as a foundation for the long-awaited elections.

Dbeibah's comments came during a meeting with the Spanish ambassador to Libya, Javier Larrache, at his office on Tuesday.

Above the European-Libyan relations, the meeting covered several areas of common interest between the two countries, including the political, economic, and security fields.

A statement by the PM media office said the two sides discussed means to strengthen bilateral relations in economic and trade fields, and the embassy's role in developing these areas, in addition to encouraging Spanish companies to return to work in Libya.

They also highlighted the importance of consultation at the highest level in the political and security aspects in order to achieve the interests of the two countries.

The Spanish ambassador, on his part, expressed his country's readiness to provide any assistance at the request of the Libyan government, reiterating his government's support for the efforts of the Government of National Unity to hold elections as soon as possible.

Discussions also covered the Cairo talks regarding the constitutional track, which the third and final round ended on Monday. In this context, Dbeibah affirmed his government's support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General's advisor, Stephanie Williams, to reach the elections as soon as possible.
