Two Belarusian doctors have been released from Libya, two months after their detention in the mountain town of Zintan.

Trauma surgeon Sergei Zdota and surgical nurse Inna Barbush arrived in Moscow on Wednesday en route to Minsk.

Russian media reports said their release was facilitated by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Kadyrov, in cooperation with Tripoli-based Presidential Council.

The head of the Russian contact group on Libya, Lev Dengov, told reporters that the direct operation was highly secret because “there are many factors and various people who would like to prevent us from completing this operation successfully.”

The two doctors, a married couple, have been working in Zintan since 2010. They were detained in October after their contact with a local health facility had expired.
