The Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj has described the Government of National Accord's (GNA) cooperation with Turkey as legitimate and a duty to the sovereignty of the country against aggressors.

Al-Sarraj told Anadolu Agency on the sidelines of the Human Rights Council meetings in Geneva that the internationally recognized GNA urged many countries to help repel Khalifa Haftar's attack on Tripoli and Turkey was the one that responded positively.

"We have asked the US, UK, Italy and Turkey for help against the aggression on Tripoli. Only Turkey responded to us." Al-Sarraj added.

He recalled the GNA-Turkey MoU in military and security cooperation, saying it is a legitimate right of the GNA and it's a sovereign duty to the people by the government, adding that it includes many factors, including counter-terrorism and training programs.

He also lashed out at Haftar's attacks on Tripoli and other areas in western Libya, saying the GNA is against coups on legitimacy and the attempts to seize power by force.

"5+5 military talks in Geneva are still ongoing and the road is still long ahead of us. We want peace and haven't asked for this war. We are just defending Libyans until we build a democratic state. We haven't had a partner in negotiations in the last year and we hope this new dialogue helps stop the war." He remarked.

He also mentioned the destruction of infrastructure and the displacement of people due to Haftar's attacks on Tripoli and the rest of cities and districts.

"Haftar's violations amount to war crimes and he as well as his loyalists should be held accountable for them." Al-Sarraj added.
