Tripolitanian Society said Wednesday it is considering establishing a water desalination plant in Tripoli, to be funded by businessmen from the city and private sector investors.

The authority said on its Facebook page that the step came as a result of the repeated use of water supplies as a weapon against the city by outlaw groups.

"Tripolitanian Society has repeatedly urged the Presidential Council to find a durable solution for the water crisis and proposed building a desalination plant, as it failed to stop the acts of vandalism against the water system," Tripolitanian Society said.

The executive committee assigned to supervise the project held a preliminary meeting on Wednesday with experts and engineers in the field of planning, civil engineering, water, soil, and environment and agreed to set up an advisory committee to embark on the implementation of the project, according to the Tripolitanian Society.
