Libya has supported a proposed new resolution backed by a majority of UN member states that seeks to undermine the veto powers exercised by the five permanent members (P5) of the UN Security Council (UNSC) - UK, US, France, China, and Russia.

Taher Al-Sunni, Libya's Ambassador to the UN, confirmed that Libya now is one of the co-sponsors of the veto initiative resolution, which requires holding an extraordinary meeting of the UN General Assembly after a veto has been cast in the Security Council.

"The step allows discussion and accountability of the concerned countries for more consensus and to hold them responsible for the veto, which caused historical injustice to the people worldwide," Al-Sunni wrote on Twitter Friday.
