The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Friday that last June was the deadliest month for illegal immigrants who tried to cross the Mediterranean to EU shores this year. The organization said in a statement that 629 people drowned at sea last June despite good weather conditions for the sea ride.

According to the Italian agency Aki, the IOM warned of the seriousness of the hostile atmosphere prevailing in Europe towards non-governmental organizations working in the Mediterranean, adding that if these NGOs were banned from rescuing the migrants, then there will be a rise in the cases of drowning.
