The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern Wednesday that the war between Russia and Ukraine could lead to a food crisis in the Middle East and Africa.

In a brief before the Security Council, Guterres said that many countries in the Middle East and Africa, which depend on wheat imports from Russia or Ukraine, might face problems.

"Many countries, including Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen, import at least half of their wheat from Ukraine or Russia," he added.

He warned that the food crisis would hit those living in poverty most and sow the seeds of political instability and turmoil around the globe.
