The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, gave notice to the Security Council of his intention to appoint the now UN Special Coordinator to the Middle East, Nikolay Mladenov, a Bulgarian born diplomat, as his special envoy to Libya.

According to Al Jazeera, the appointment of Mladenov as a new UN envoy in Libya came after Africa relented in its insistence on appointing the position to an African diplomat, after more than eight months of divisions in the Security Council.

The former UN envoy to Libya was the Lebanese born Ghassan Salame, who resigned in early March, allegedly due to health reasons.
