The head of Maya Municipal Branch of Zawiya, Mustafa Qirisiah, said in a press statement that an illegal immigration boat sank off the coast of Maya on Tuesday afternoon after it had sailed from Matrad district in Zawiya for European shores.
Qirisiah confirmed that he and a group of locals from Maya managed to save seven migrants; some of them were transferred to the hospital for emergency aid.
He pointed out that Jafara Security Directorate cooperated with them in evacuating the survivors and recovering some of the bodies, calling on the Red Crescent to help recover the rest of the bodies, which remain floating out at sea.
