Flights in Libya will be stopped on March 13 if certain demands were not met, the General Union of Workers has warned, a step that would bring all Libyan airports to a standstill.

In a letter to the GNC and the Salvation Government on Wednesday, the union demanded the government to pay the outstanding salary arrears for the workers of Libyan Company for Ground Services and the National Catering Company.

It also requested an end the administrative division in the Libyan Airlines Company between Benghazi and Tripoli to enable the company to pay its financial dues to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Last January, Libyan Airlines unions of pilots and flight attendants, and company staff said in a joint statement that the company division had caused serious damage, in addition to financial and administrative violations, which might lead to the bankruptcy of the company.

"We ask the government to allow the leased airplane of Afriqiyah Airways to leave Mitiga Airport in implementation to the contract signed with the lessee." The General Union of Workers demands.

Afriqiyah Airways's Airbus A330 was taken on dry lease by the Turkish Airlines last March, but the aircraft has been returned to Libya by the government and landed at Mitiga Airport.

The government claimed that the contract signed with the Turkish company was illegal while Afriqiyah Airways denied this.

The General Union of Workers said if these demands were not met, all flights would be suspended in all Libyan airports.
