Clouds of thick black smoke filled the skies of Jalu on Monday putting the region on the brink of an environmental disaster, caused by burning of petroleum residues at Nafoura Oil Field, 15km away from the town.
Residents and environmentalists have called on the National Oil Corporation to urgently address this problem which negatively affects people, animals and plants in the region. They also called oil companies to respect international safety standards, specifications and regulations to preserve the environment.
