The Libyan Internet Society organized Tuesday an awareness-raising program on child online protection on the occasion of “Safer Internet Day," which falls on February 6 of each year.

The program was organized under the auspices of the General Information Authority in cooperation with the Ministry of Education at the Teachers Union headquarters in Tripoli under the slogan "Create, Communicate and Share with Respect. Better Internet Begins with You" with a view to educate children, parents and caregivers on the proper and responsible use of the Internet.

More than 200 students from the fourth and sixth grade took part in the event in addition to a number of social workers, computer teachers and members of the General Movement for Libyan Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.

The program was attended by experts and other interested stakeholder, including the Chairman of the General Information Authority Management Committee, the Dean of the Information Technology Faculty at the University of Tripoli, President of the Libyan Internet Society, the Director of Cyber Crimes Department at the Criminal Investigations Authority, and a number of officials from the Ministry of Education.

The event included interactive awareness programs, which aim to enhance children's awareness of the dangers posed by the misuse of the internet and guide them to a proper and safe usage of information and communication technologies, in addition to sensitize parents and caregivers of their role in this aspect in order to ensure a safer environment for children on the internet.

Safer Internet Day is an international event aimed at promoting safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people.
