The UN Adviser on Libya Stephanie Williams met on Wednesday with a group of mayors from different municipalities of Libya.

Williams said on Twitter that they discussed the importance of respecting the will of the 2.8 million Libyans who registered in the elections.

"We had an important and fruitful dialogue on the developments in the situation and the importance of respecting the will of 2.8 million Libyans who registered for elections and aspire to exercise their democratic rights to choose who represents them," the UN representative tweeted.

She said they also touched upon the need for comprehensive national reconciliation, the protection of social fabric in Libya, and efforts to de-centralize and support municipalities. In this context, the attendants highlighted the urgent need to provide budgets for municipalities to allow them to deliver services to their citizens.

"I am certain that this session is the first station for communication with the general mayors of the municipalities of Libya, east, west, and south, and a number of direct and virtual meetings will follow in the coming days, Williams added.
