Washington-based United States Institute of Peace (USIP) hosted Friday a seminar in the presence of the Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Sayala to discuss the ongoing conflict in Libya. Many officials from the US and Libya as well as analysts and experts in Libyan affairs attended the seminar.
The media office of the Libyan Foreign Ministry said Sayala talked about the latest developments on security and political levels in Libya and the ways to reach a solution to the crises, shedding light on the US role in helping Libyans fulfill their aspirations for free, democratic and civil state.
On Thursday, a Libyan high ranking delegation, headed by Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha and Foreign Minister Mohammed Sayala, visited the United States and held meetings with American officials to discuss bilateral relations, including a meeting with the White House National Security Advisor for Middle East and North Africa affairs.
The meeting discussed security and humanitarian issues in Libya amid the ongoing fighting in Tripoli after the offensive against the capital by Khalifa Haftar's forces. It also discussed the need to resume the political process and establishing the rule of state laws and legitimate institutions.
Also on Thursday, the US called in a statement on Haftar's forces to end their offensive on Tripoli to facilitate cooperation between US and Libya to prevent any unjustifiable external interventions in the country and to boost the rule of legitimacy in Libya.
The US statement underscored support for Libya’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in the face of Russia’s attempts to exploit the conflict against the will of the Libyan people.
