Four members of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, namely, Chris Murphy, Chris Coons, Lindsey Graham, and Marco Rubio, have reintroduced the Libya Stabilization Act aimed at providing a peaceful diplomatic solution to the conflict in the country.
"The Libya Stability Act punishes those who commit human rights violations, support foreign military intervention or threaten peace, security and stability in Libya," Senator Murphy said.
He indicated that the bill would also mobilize US resources, including humanitarian aid, to strengthen good governance, fight corruption, support free and fair elections, and boost economic recovery in Libya.
Murphy says the war in Libya plunged the country into a humanitarian crisis and provided an opportune environment for extremist groups. Outside actors have further complicated the situation by pumping in money and weapons in the war-torn country, he added.
Senator Murphy stressed the need to hold accountable all those who seek to spoil the democratic transition in Libya. He also sees it is important to provide democratic institutions with financial support and vast diplomatic experience for them to succeed.
Meanwhile, Senator Chris Coons said that the Libya Stability Act imposes sanctions on those who seek to stand in the way of a diplomatic solution in Libya. He reaffirmed to the parties on the ground that the United States is committed to supporting peace and stability in Libya.
For his part, Senator Lindsey Graham reiterated that their goal is to prevent the conflict from spreading before the entire region becomes a breeding ground for terrorists.
"It is of America and our allies' interest to see a stable and secure Libya," he added, stressing that work must continue to hold those responsible for fueling the conflict accountable and impose sanctions on those who destabilize Libya.
