The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he discussed with his UAE counterpart Abdullah bin Zayed the Russian presence in Libya, ceasefire and the need to resume political solution efforts in the country.

This comes as the US Congress is preparing a bipartisan act against the Russian involvement in Libya and its support for Khalifa Haftar's forces via mercenaries recruited by Wagner Group.

Le Monde said in a report on Friday that Tripoli battle, which started last April, had entered a new phase as Russian mercenaries joined to support Haftar's forces, adding that this could turn things around and rebalance the strategies in the region.

The French newspaper added that the US had denounced the Russian military involvement in Libya, saying the escalation of US responses to the Russian issue had intensified tensions between Moscow and Washington, which could make Libya a battlefield for US-Russia proxy war.

Le Monde indicated that Russia's intervention in Libya, despite being limited in cost and means, it raises many questions as it goes at odds with Russian non-interference policy in countries' internal affairs.
