The United States (US) Alternate Representative for Special Political Affairs at the United Nations (UN), Jeffrey DeLaurentis, accused certain countries of providing Khalifa Haftar in Libya with weapons and fighters to prolong the crisis in the country and the suffering of the people.

The US Alternate Representative added in his briefing at a Security Council session tackling Libya on Friday that the provision of weapons to Haftar constituted a violation of the Security Council arms embargo on Libya, saying "it is about time those countries stopped such destabilizing acts".

DeLaurentis said that the foreign fighters and mercenaries in Libya encourage those who hinder the holding of fair and transparent elections, saying they are still present in Libya despite the signing of the ceasefire agreement that was approved by the Security Council.

The US diplomat also warned those who are hindering the holding of elections in Libya in time next December of sanctions, urging the UN support Mission in Libya to paly a more effective role to ensure the country reaches this democratic day.
