Around 106 civilians were killed and 252 injured between April 1 to June 30, 2020, as a result of the armed conflict in Libya, according to a report by the United Nation Support Mission (UNSMIL) in Libya.

The report which was published on Wednesday on the UNSMIL website, called on all parties to the conflict to immediately halt all military operations, respect international human rights law and international humanitarian law, protect civilians, and allow the authorities to confront the threat of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the report, the casualties involving deaths and injuries include 261 men, 45 women, 44 boys, and eight girls.

Ground fighting was the leading cause of civilian casualties, followed by explosive remnants of war, and airstrikes, the UNSMIL clarified, noting that before they withdrew from Tripoli’s southern suburbs last month, Haftar's militias left behind mines and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), Explosive Remnants of War (ERWs) and booby traps, imperiling the safety and security of returning residents and resulting in civilian casualties, including children, as well as security personnel.

Airstrikes were the third leading cause of civilian casualties with 40 victims, followed by IEDs, with two deaths and two deliberate killings, the UNSMIL report showed.
