The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) called on Wednesday for an investigation into the abduction of MP,Siham Sergewa in Benghazi, describing it as a brutal incident.

The mission said that the statement of the interior ministry of the east-based parallel government carried no assurance on the safety or the whereabouts of Sergewa.

The parallel interior ministry has said that a group of sleeper cells or terrorists might have infiltrated Benghazi and kidnapped Sergewa.

The UN mission stressed that the eastern authorities are responsible for the safety and security of the people within the territory they control, including the cases of prolonged enforced disappearance, which is considered as a serious violation of international humanitarian law and international human rights law.

The UN mission underscored that there will be zero tolerance with respect to silencing women's voices in decision-making positions, reaffirming its significant support for the full involvement of women in political life and decision-making in the country.
