The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has congratulated the residents of Garabulli for their participation in the municipal council elections, praising the efforts of the Central Committee for Municipal Council Elections (CCMCE) to implement a "secure and professionally-conducted" electoral process.

In a statement Saturday, the UNSMIL also welcomed the re-run in 2 polling centres in Swani Bin Adam Municipality of the elections held on 7 January.

The UN mission stressed the importance of "transparency and integrity for each council election, saying that such elements are vital for ensuring the conduct of credible and inclusive council elections for all Libyan voters.

The first local election for the new term for municipal councils kicked off in Ghat city in August last year.

The CCMCE head Salim bin Tahia confirmed in previous statements that the local elections were conducted in challenging circumstances.

"We are working in the absence of some fundamentals, for instance, the magnetic national cards that facilitate the process of voter identification, besides some IDPs who are still without identity papers as a result of the conflict situation in the country". the  CCMCE head has said.
