Member States of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) have welcomed the briefing of the head of the UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ghassan Salame to the UNSC on the latest developments in the Libyan arena.

The UNSC condemned in a statement the recent violence in the capital Tripoli, stressing that the military option is not a solution to the crisis

It also called on all parties to the conflict to exercise restraint, protect civilians and engage seriously in national reconciliation, demanding that those who undermine the peace process in Libya be held accountable.

The UNSC welcomed the efforts of the UNSMIL, which resulted in a ceasefire agreement in Tripoli, including the offer made by the head of the UNSMIL to provide technical assistance to verify the implementation of the ceasefire and its breaches, monitor violations and establish sustainable security arrangements, expressing grave concern over the humanitarian situation in Tripoli and throughout Libya.

The statement also praised the efforts of the UN envoy Ghassan Salame in consulting with the Libyan parties in order to lay the necessary constitutional foundations for the elections and the ratification of the necessary electoral laws.

The UNSC state members also renewed their support to the Presidential Council and its President Fayez Al-Sarraj for advocating national reconciliation within the framework of the Libyan-led political process under the auspices of the United Nations.
