The United Nations Security Council has backed up holding presidential and parliamentary elections in Libya in December 2018.

The UN Security Council on Wednesday issued a presidential statement saying elections could be a significant step in bringing stability to the country.

UNSEC adopted a French-drafted presidential statement that stresses that “the current political and security situation in Libya is not sustainable.” And calls on all Libyans to engage in credible, inclusive and peaceful elections in order to achieve a united and stable state.

On May 29, Paris international conference brought together main Libyan parties to the conflict and ended with a declaration of principles that would see Libya hold elections on December 10, 2018.

The Security Council presidential statement also urged for commitment to work constructively with the UN to organize credible and peaceful parliamentary and presidential elections, urging all Libyans to respect the results.

It also welcomed the Libyan parties’ recognition of the importance of developing a constitutional basis for elections.
