The Tunisian ambassador to the United Nations, Tarek Ladeb, has urged the Security Council to send a peacekeeping force to Libya to monitor the consolidation of the ceasefire, saying this resolution could be taken in the January 27 session of the council.
Tunisia assumed the presidency of the 68th session of the UN Security Council Monday, when Ladeb told reporters that he hoped the Security Council's upcoming session would focus on the progress made in Libya via the political track.
He also indicated that the Security Council would continue to support political solutions in Libya, urging all parties to put their differences regarding the nomination of the new transitional executive authority aside.
The UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged last week for an international monitoring mechanism of the Libya ceasefire, adding in a report to the Security Council that this mechanism could achieve consolidation of the truce in the country.
Guterres said the Libyan 5+5 Joint Military Commission had agreed on the ceasefire and urged the Security Council for supporting it with a UN-supervised monitoring mission of unarmed personnel.
