Nickolay Mladenov

The UN Security Council on Tuesday approved a proposal by Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, to appoint Bulgarian Nickolay Mladenov as the UN special envoy to Libya, Reuters quoted diplomats as saying.

Mladenov will replace Ghassan Salame, who stepped down as the UN envoy to Libya last March, due to stress and health conditions.

The members of the Security Council stressed, in a statement, the importance of a reliable and effective mechanism for monitoring the ceasefire led by Libya.

They emphasized the need for a comprehensive report from the Secretary-General regarding proposals for effective monitoring of the ceasefire under the auspices of the United Nations.

Meanwhile, the Security Council reiterated its call for the withdrawal of all foreign fighters and mercenaries from Libya.
