The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on Monday on Khalifa Haftar to end military offensive on Tripoli.

In a joint press conference with the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki in New York, Guterres told reporters that his position is very clear and that is an appeal to a ceasefire, which means cessation of hostilities, which means no more offensive.

“What we need is to end foreign interferences to allow Libyans to once again come together to discuss seriously politically a way through. We had common initiatives. A National Conference to take place in Libya”, Guterres said.

He hoped that conditions will be established allowing for the National Conference to move again in the future.

The UNSMIL called on Sunday on all parties to commit to an extendable one-week humanitarian truce starting Ramadan 01, but Haftar issued a statement ordering his forces to continue fighting during Ramadan, saying this holy month is a month of jihad and Islamic conquests.

Secretary General's spokesman told reporters earlier that none of the fighting sides in Libya had agreed to the humanitarian truce in Ramadan, saying terrorist groups would try to take advantage of this war to expand in the country.
