The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) will be restructured for the first time since its onset in 2011, after it has been given a one more year mandate.

Libyan ambassador to the UN Taher El Sonni said on Twitter that the UN Security Council decided to appoint a special coordinator for the UNSMIL and replace the post title from Special Representative of the Secretary General to Special Envoy to Libya.

The Special Envoy to Libya would be focusing on good offices and mediation with Libya parties and stakeholders to and the ongoing conflict. Meanwhile, the coordinator of the UNSMIL would tackle day-to-day operations of the mission in the country.

The Secretary General of the UN Antonio Guterres proposed names for the post of UN Special Envoy to Libya, saying consultations on this post would take effect soon and added that Acting Envoy to Libya Stephenie Williams was preparing for a new round of the Libyan political dialogue.
