The UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Canadian Georgette Gagnon as Assistant Secretary-General and Resident Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya.

The spokesman for the Secretary-General, Stephane Dujarric, said that Gagnon will succeed the Sudanese Yacoub El Hillo, whose mission ends on the 5th of next January.

"Guterres is grateful for El Hillo's service in supporting the United Nations mandate in the country, and his work with the UN mission in Libya," UN head spokesman said.

Dujarric pointed out that Canadian Georgette Gagnon has more than 25 years of experience leading and implementing strategic initiatives on human rights, humanitarian work, development, and coordinating multi-disciplinary teams in conflict and post-conflict situations.
