UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame arrived in Benghazi on Thursday for talks with the city’s officials and commander of Dignity Operation warlord Khalifa Haftar, but a tribal man who boldly called for murder of children and old women in then-besieged Ganfouda district was on the agenda of Ghassan Salame.

Salame started his meetings with warlord Khalifa Haftar to discuss the political process with the military man. In that meeting, Haftar was recognized as “Libyan National Army commander” in violation of the Libyan Political Agreement, which was drafted by the UN Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to end the military and political conflicts.

The recognition was met with a wave of angry comment on the official page of UNSMIL on Facebook.

Salame then met with a number of House of Representatives members urging them to adopt initiatives to end the status quo in the country.

On the second day of his visit, Salame met with mayor Abdul-Rahman Abbar to discuss reconstruction of the city.

Later, he held a warm meeting with Benghazi elders headed by Beleid Sheikhi, the man who incited fighters of Dignity Operation to murder the women and their children in Ganfouda.

In 2016, Sheikhi urged publicly on TV the fighters to kill all the besieged families there, accusing the women and children of being ISIS.

“We don’t need those old ISIS women anymore, don’t tell me about human rights," he incited.

He added that all people aged 14 and over in Ganfouda must be executed.
