The Head of the UNSMIL Ghassan Salame has welcomed political initiatives from the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sirraj and Khalifa Haftar as well as other parties, but he said the conditions are inappropriate to hold elections in Libya.

Salame told Kuwait News Agency in Rome that the talk about a political solution has become welcome by parties, yet elections need better conditions to be held.

"UNSMIL is in direct contact with the Arab League's Secretary General and is providing him with weekly reports about the ongoing conflict in Tripoli." Salame added.

Salame said the involvement of Arab countries in mediation to find solutions to the Libyan crisis is "bigger than his authorities as a UN envoy," hailing Kuwait's positive role in supporting the UN efforts to resolve the Libyan crisis.

Salame met the Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Millanesi at the 3+3 meeting in Rome and discussed the importance of returning to the political process and dialogue to end the conflict in Libya.
