The UN envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, has announced that the preparations for the Libyan National Conference are going smoothly.

The National Conference is one of the four stages of Salame's action plan to end Libya's current political impasse, which he announced last September.

Salame added in a video statement to the European Union's Summit, which was reported by Bawabat Al-Wasat, that there will be a referendum on the Libyan constitution once the Supreme Court in the country gave the "green light" and once the voters' registration was sufficiently enough to pass the constitution.

"My first task is to build bridges among the three Libyan generations." Salame added.

EU ministers, on the other hand, reiterated support for the efforts of Salame in striking a comprehensive national reconciliation in Libya, stressing the need for transparent and credible elections in 2018 in the country.

The French Foreign Minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, said he trusts Salame and his ability to implement the action plan he devised as per the aims he set for the war-torn country.

Le Drian, according to diplomats, was referring to amending Libyan Political Agreement and reshuffling the Presidential Council.
