The Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ghassan Salame has called for a ceasefire truce in Tripoli during the upcoming Eid Al-Adha (Around "August 10-14").

In his briefing at the UN Security Council on Monday, Salame said the truce should be accompanied by an exchange of prisoners and remains as well as the release of detainees.

The UN envoy to Libya called for a high-level meeting with stakeholders in Libya taking part in it to urge for a ceasefire and an end to the arms flow to the country, saying there should be no delay for the ceasefire so "we can save Libya from becoming a haven for terrorist groups."

"Libya has become a place for trials on new and modern weapons and the countries that support both parties of the conflict have sent military experts on the ground, which is a violation of Security Council resolutions that prohibit arms sales to Libya." Salame remarked.

He also called on Tripoli authorities to stop using Mitiga Airport for military purposes and on Khalifa Haftar's forces to stop air-raiding it.

Salame met with the Head of the Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj on Sunday.

Al-Sarraj told Salame that resuming the political process is tied to the withdrawal of attacking forces to their previous positions, reiterating the need for new negotiators that take into account the damage done by the attack on Tripoli.

Also on Sunday, Salame met with Haftar in Al-Rajma and warned of the consequences of more military escalation and foreign intervention in Libya, reviewing the possibilities for returning to the political process, according to the UNSMIL.
