The UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame said during a visit to Misrata on Tuesday that there are efforts underway to replace the armed formations in Tripoli with a joint force.

Salame and the political deputy head of the UNSMIL Stephanie Williams met with parliament members, High council of State and municipality members in Misrata.

"We're trying to replace the armed groups in Tripoli with a joint force. The capital is for all Libyans, and so any and every Libyan must be able to access it in safety," Salame said, according to the UNSMIL's Twitter account.

He added that the support of the lawmakers representing Misrata is vital to push forward the current reforms on security and economic levels, referring to Misrata's importance for its economic and military strength in Libya.

Salame met in Misrata with different stakeholders and officials as well as civil societies and academics, according to the UNSMIL on Twitter.

The parliament members, High council of State and municipality members and others in Misrata voiced support for the neutrality of the UNSMIL and for the economic reforms taking place in Libya currently, besides the new security arrangements.
