The Tripolitanian Society has deemed the meeting of the US ambassador and some EU representatives with Libyan presidential candidates as a violation of national sovereignty, saying that the candidates should be meeting the Libyan people, the genuine stakeholders in these elections.

"At a time when we and all national forces reject holding presidential elections without a constitution or constitutional rule... We see communications going on between Libyan figures seeking to occupy government positions and ambassadors of foreign countries, which is a clear violation of national sovereignty that we have seen repeatedly since the entry of the United Nations into the Libyan scene," the block said in a statement Wednesday.

The statement called for transparency and for punishing every official who exceeds the limits of his duties by allowing such violations to occur, according to the text.

"The absence of national will and greed for power has blinded many people," the block said, adding that the politicians are "begging legitimacy" from beyond borders while neglecting their people's voice.

US Ambassador Richard Norland confirmed in a tweet Wednesday that he had met with "a few of the presidential candidates in Tripoli," hinting that that does not mean favouring a particular candidate.
