Times of Malta newspaper said Valetta had partnered up with Turkey in its efforts to bring stability to neighbouring Libya and limit the flow of migrants fleeing North Africa.
Government sources told Times of Malta that the country's policy on Libya was now in line with that of the Turkish government after months of lengthy discussions and diplomatic efforts.
It added that Malta, like Turkey, backs the internationally recognised Government of National Accord headed by Fayez Al-Sarraj.
During a visit to Turkish capital Ankara this week, Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri met his Turkish and Libyan counterparts holding talks on security in the Mediterranean.
Sources told the newspaper that Camilleri was hoping Turkey would support the Tripoli government in its efforts to stifle many of "the militia that operate along the western Libyan coast".
The Libyan Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha met last week with the Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar and Maltese Interior Minister Byron Camilleri in Ankara to discuss cooperation, developments in Libya and stability in the Mediterranean.
Bashagha said at the time in a joint press conference with the Turkish and Maltese officials that the tripartite meeting aimed at boosting cooperation among the three countries in fighting illegal immigration, organized crime, fighting terrorism, and improving security capabilities.
In June, the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council Fayez Al-Sarraj met in Valetta Malta's Prime Minister Robert Abela and attended opening of an immigration coordination center as per an agreement signed by the two countries last May.
