Three people were killed and four others injured when an explosion late Tuesday night rocked an ammunition depot in the Naval Academy of Janzour located 24 kilometers west of the capital Tripoli, said the Spokesman of the Libyan Navy Masoud Abdul-Samad.
Abdul-Samad confirmed in a statement that among the dead were the commander of the academy, Genera-Brigadier "Ahmed Ayoub," and the commander of the Naval College, General-Brigadier "Salem Abu Salah", besides another deceased individual identified to be "Mohammad Khalifa."
A fire appears to have triggered the explosion, according to the source.
"When dealing with the fire, the doors of the warehouse were opened and the supply of oxygen resulted in the explosion of the ammunition, the Libyan navy spokesman explained.
The blast caused great damage to the warehouse structure and several people got injured while attempting to distinguish the fire before the emergency crew arrived at the scene.
It was not clear what caused the overnight blaze at the academy in Janzur district but the navy has formed an inquiry board to investigate the circumstances of the incident, Abdul-Samad added.
