Social efforts by a committee of southern notables and elders managed to bring the two warring tribes in Sabha into signing a ceasefire for three days starting 11:00 p.m Tuesday.

The member of the High Council of State, Ali Abu Sabiha, said the committee has convinced the two conflict sides into signing a truce for three days and urged the Sabha residents to cooperate with the committee in order to facilitate ending the vendetta between the Awlad Sulaiman and Gadadfa tribes so that the city regains peace and stability.

Prior to the ceasefire, many delegations of notables and social figures tried to broker a truce between the two tribes, but they all failed due to the inflexibility of some figures, who are backed up by militias in Sabha.

Sabha has been plunged into violent clashes between Awlad Sulaiman and Gadadfa tribes since last Thursday leading to a number of deaths and injuries due to the haphazard shelling inside residential areas.

Ironically, the fight between the two tribes was sparked by an act of a monkey owned by a Gadadfa tribesman. The man's monkey jumped on a group of high schoolgirls and snatched the scarf of one of the girls, leaving her bare-headed in the street, which is rendered a shameful image in the tribal community of Sabha in particular and the south in general.

In retaliation, Awlad Sulaiman tribesmen, the relatives of the girl, killed the monkey and the owner and hence the blood feud was kicked off between the two tribes each in retaliation of their kinsmen.
