The Tajoura Elders Council in western Libya has lodged a lawsuit at the Attorney General Office against the Head of the Presidential Council (PC) Fayez Al-Sirraj, Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR) Aqilah Saleh and the commander of the self-styled army in eastern Libya, Khalifa Haftar for “crimes against the country” backing up the case with over 30 papers of evidence.

Khalifa Haftar

The council accused him of a military coup on legitimate authorities (General National Congress) on February 14, 2014, when he froze the constitutional declaration and suspended GNC, which they said created political vacuum in Libya and thus allowed agenda-driven parties to wreak havoc in Libya ever since.

The council added that Haftar escaped to east Libya as he was wanted for arrest by Ali Zaidan then-government and launched Dignity Operation made up of outlaw militias, saying they are not part of the Libyan army.

“They started their operation on May 16, and the rest is history.” The Council added, referring to the brutal military action on Benghazi, Derna, Tripoli and elsewhere, displacement of people, seizing and burning of properties, killing on ID cards and using foreign mercenaries and aircraft (such as UAE, French and Egyptian) to air attack the city residents under the pretext of fighting terrorism.

Aqilah Saleh

The council accused HoR Speaker of usurping power after the Supreme Court ruling (item 11) of the seventh constitutional declaration, which annulled the convening of HoR meetings, accusing him as well of backing up Haftar’s “Dignity Operation” and appointing US officer (Haftar) according to their statement, as the chief commander of the army, referring to Haftar’s being Chad captive in the past.

Fayez Al-Sirraj

The Head of the PC has also been accused of claiming to be the chief commander of the Libyan army and of recognition of Haftar as the commander in chief of the Libyan army, not to mention his recognition of Dignity Operation and the position given to Haftar by the HoR when Al-Sirraj was an MP.

The council considered both the PC formed by Skhirat agreement in 2015 and the HoR which they said is dissolved by the Supreme Court ruling are claiming to be the chief commander of the Libyan army, calling on the Attorney General in their lawsuit to probe the evidence they presented and to take the legal measures against the three persons filed in the case.
