The General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) announced a state of emergency in the first gas unit of Misurata station, with a productive capacity of 350 MW, bringing its operations to a standstill.

The first and fifth units of Al-Zawiya station has also ceased functioning, with a capacity of more than 250 megawatts, the GECOL added.

The company further explained that the break down of these units have led to the disruption of all power transmission circuits in southern Libya, plunging the region into total darkness yesterday evening.

The malfunctioning of these units has caused a shortage of more than 2000 MW, in the electric grid, according to the company, confirming that work is underway to fix the damage, in order to put the units' back in services as soon as possible.
