The first turbine of Al-Khaleej steam power plant has been brought into operation, the General Electricity Company announced on Saturday.

The turbine generates 350MW that will help reduce ongoing rolling blackouts in Tripoli.

The plant, 30km west of Sirte, was closed down in June 2015 when the radical group of ISIS took it over. It was recaptured one year later by Misrata-led forces.

Al Khalij steam power plant is a project that involves the construction of a power plant firing natural gas and heavy and light fuel oils, comprising four turbines. Each turbine will be rated at a nominal gross of 350MW for a total of 1400MW. It's engineered by South Korean firms Hyundai and Doosan.
