Taking the duty oath for the new justices of the Libyan Supreme Court was split on Monday between Benghazi in the east for those appointed by the House of Representatives (HoR) and Tripoli in the west for those appointed by the Supreme Court in the presence of the Chief Justice.

On August 21, the HoR decided to reshuffle the system of the Supreme Court so that the legal oath would be taken at the HoR. This came after the activation of the constitutional circuit court, shut in 2016, by the Supreme Court's General Assembly and the acceptance of some candidates by HoR to be sworn in as justices.

Observers believe that the decision of the HoR to make the swearing-in of justices in the east was a reaction to the activation of the constitutional circuit court and could lead to more division, especially that the HoR Speaker was trying to change the Chief Justice Mohammed Al-Hafi whom he sacked from the position of Head of the Supreme Council of Judiciary.
