Minister of Justice in the Salvation Government Mustafa Al-Gulaib, Thursday, held the Mediterranean countries responsible for casualties of illegal immigrants.

During a press conference, Al-Gulaib also reproached the neighbouring countries for not controlling their borders and duly not meeting their obligations to stop the waves of illegal immigrants, but, instead, pushing them to Libya which witnesses unstable security situations.

"Libya as a transit country should not shoulder the responsibility alone because it’s a victim like others. Most immigrant waves that come to Libya may actually not leave the country but stay within our homeland borders and we consequently bear all international and domestic liabilities towards those immigrants." said the Minister.

He continued to point out that those countries did not fulfil their commitments to help the Libyan authorities, and so he refused Libya being held accountable for what happens to the migrants because it passes through difficult security conditions.

He referred to the recommendations of Rabat, Morocco conference in November 2013   which declared the joint responsibility of all the countries concerned; the neighbouring countries and the countries of both the South and the North that should help Libya to secure its borders and to look into this human tragedy.

Al-Gulaib called on the European Union and the United Nations to activate the relevant agreements of understanding with Libya to fight the illegal immigration.

He called for a regional conference at the end of September to address this phenomenon and stop the tragedy with the participation of destination countries in Europe, and the source countries from Africa, as well as the neighbouring countries.

Last week, the Libyan Coast Guard and the Libyan Red Crescent recovered more than 100 bodies of migrants after their boat sank off Zuwara coast.
