The UN Security Council urged Thursday the Libyan warring parties to commit to an immediate ceasefire, expressing concerns over the military escalation on the ground.

The Security Council added in a statement that it was gravely concerned about the impact of Coronavirus outbreak in Libya, urging warring parties to halt hostilities immediately and to allow humanitarian assistance to reach people across the country without obstacles.

The Security Council called on member states to commit to the arms embargo on Libya, reiterating commitment to the sovereignty and unity of the country and the UN central role in facilitating a conclusive Libyan-led and Libyan-owned political process.

Over the last two days, Khalifa Haftar's forces had escalated military attacks on civilian neighborhoods in Tripoli despite announcing a humanitarian halt of hostilities amid fears of a Coronavirus outbreak.

In the meantime, Libyan Army forces under the command of the Government of National Accord launched Operation Peace Storm to respond to Haftar's attacks on civilians, achieving several advances on different frontlines and causing Haftar's forces massive losses.
