The UN Security Council has extended unanimously the mandate of UN Support Mission in Libya until September 15, 2020.

"The mandate of UNSMIL is a special political mission to support efforts for a Libyan security and economic dialogue and to establish the laws approved by the Government of National Accord in Libya." The Security Council's resolution says.

It also helps establish a ceasefire and the transitional phase including constitution and elections in Libya.

The Security Council's resolution asked the Secretary General Antonio Guterres to provide an assessment of the needed steps to reach a ceasefire in Libya.

It called on all member states to abide by the arms embargo on Libya and to abstain from intervening in the ongoing conflict in the country.

"The member states should exert more efforts to support the UN envoy to Libya Ghassan Salame in the quest for establishing a ceasefire and resumption of the political process."

The Security Council also urged the member states to cooperate with UNSMIL in ensuring the safety of UN staffers working in Libya.
