The Arab Maghreb Scholars Association has strongly condemned the statements of Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi regarding his threat of military intervention in Libya under the pretext of protecting Egyptian national security, warning of the consequences of such act that "contradicts the Islamic and international norms."

In a statement on Thursday, the scholars called on Sisi to observe the principles of good neighborliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of neighbouring states, holding him responsible for supporting "mercenaries and militias" who were used by foreign powers to manipulate with the Libyan affairs and the national security of the entire region.

"Arab Maghreb countries must assume their historical responsibilities and workout initiatives to end the division in Libya," the scholars added, stressing the need for the international community to also work to preserve the unity and integrity of the Libyan territory.

The statement called on the people of the Maghreb region to condemn the attacks launched by Haftar against the western region in Libya and the horrific crimes that followed, at the same time, it urged Libyans to band together and block any "negative external interference."

It is noteworthy that the Arab Maghreb Scholars Association was founded on December 19, 2013, and consists of a group of Sharia scholars from the Maghreb region of North Africa.
